California Resources Corporation (C.R.C.) has announced plans to transform a 92-acre industrial site in Huntington Beach into a vibrant mixed-use community. The proposal aims to add up to 800 residential units, a hotel with 350 rooms, and ample green spaces, including a 1-mile linear park. This development follows a trend of revitalizing former industrial sites to better serve community needs. Approval from local authorities is required for the proposal to advance. C.R.C. aims to decommission existing oil facilities while continuing its energy operations during the planning phase.
Huntington Beach is buzzing with new developments as California Resources Corporation (C.R.C.) has announced a bold plan to transform a significant piece of land in the area. This 92-acre property, nestled between Goldenwest Street and Seapoint Street on the inland side of Pacific Coast Highway, is set for a major makeover aimed at redefining the community.
The proposal from C.R.C. seeks to rezone the area from its current industrial status to a lively mixed-use community. This ambitious plan highlights the company’s commitment to evolving alongside the community’s needs. Imagine living in a place that offers not only a home but also amenities and green spaces for everyone to enjoy!
C.R.C. is planning to develop up to 800 residential units on the site. The residential options will include a diverse array of housing types like single-family homes, townhouses, and cozy condos, making it appealing to families, singles, and everyone in between. Notably, 10 percent of these units are set to comply with affordable housing policies, ensuring that there are options for all residents, regardless of income.
But there’s more! The proposal isn’t just about residential living. It also includes the development of a hotel with up to 350 rooms, spanning approximately 16 acres of the property. This hotel isn’t just a place to stay; it will feature enticing retail and dining options, making it a fantastic hub for locals and visitors alike.
And let’s not forget the outdoor spaces! C.R.C. plans to dedicate 23 acres of the property to open space that will boast a stunning 1-mile linear park along the Pacific Coast Highway (PCH). Imagine walking, jogging, or cycling along the beautiful coastline, surrounded by nature and the sound of the waves.
On March 28, C.R.C. officially submitted its application to the city, marking the first step in a lengthy process. The rezoning aims to amend the city’s Palm/Goldenwest specific plan, which currently limits 94% of the property to commercial uses. This is a significant shift that embraces a broader vision for the community.
However, this proposal isn’t a done deal just yet. Changes to the local coastal program will need the approval of the California Coastal Commission, and the Huntington Beach Planning Commission alongside the City Council must give their nod of approval for the rezoning request to proceed. It’s a collaborative effort to ensure that all parties have a say in how this community can continue to grow and thrive.
Once approvals are in place, the existing oil and gas facilities will be decommissioned, making way for this exciting new development. While the transformation won’t happen overnight (development is not expected to begin for several years), C.R.C. will continue its energy resource operations in the meantime.
This initiative comes on the heels of another progressive project in the area. The previous council recently approved the Magnolia Tank Farm Project, which aims to redevelop another former oil site located in southeastern Huntington Beach. Such projects underscore a trend toward revitalizing former industrial sites into spaces that prioritize community needs and offer a better quality of life.
As Huntington Beach looks towards the future, it holds the promise of an exciting redevelopment that aligns with the aspirations of its community members. Stay tuned as this story unfolds, and keep your eyes peeled for updates on what could become a vibrant new neighborhood in this sun-soaked paradise!
