Candidates fundraise and engage with the community in Orange County for the upcoming elections.
In Orange County, political candidates are ramping up their fundraising efforts as they prepare for the 2026 congressional races. Notably, incumbent Young Kim has reported record fundraising totals, raising approximately $1.3 million. Democratic challenger Esther Kim Varet follows closely with over $1 million raised. The competitive nature of these races suggests a thrilling electoral season ahead, particularly in the 40th District, where fundraising totals and voter demographics will play a crucial role in shaping the outcome.
In the sunny streets of Orange County, political candidates are gearing up for a thrilling ride as they prepare for the 2026 congressional races. Buckle up, folks, because fundraising totals from the first quarter of 2025 indicate that we might just have some nail-biting battles on our hands in the upcoming midterm elections!
Taking center stage is the 40th Congressional District, where Republican incumbent Young Kim is aiming to secure her seat again. She’s off to an impressive start, raising around $1.3 million between January and March—marking her best first-quarter performance yet! This amount is more than double what she raked in for the same period in 2021, showing that she’s not playing around.
But hold your horses; there’s also a noteworthy challenger in the ring. Democratic newcomer Esther Kim Varet is making waves too, reporting over $1 million in her fundraising efforts, with a significant chunk coming from personal loans and contributions. Remarkably, more than $300,000 of her funds came from within California, clearly showcasing her home-state support.
Meanwhile, other candidates in this district are feeling the heat. Christina Gagnier has reported raising over $305,000, while Joe Kerr, who faced off against Kim in 2024, raised around $77,000. Notably, Nina Linh did not report any fundraising, which raises the question: is she in the game or sitting it out?
As political insiders will tell you, fundraising totals are crucial indicators of a candidate’s viability and momentum. Some of the funds reported are carryovers from previous cycles, which can influence the current totals. Still, it’s crystal clear that Young Kim’s financial backing reflects her vital status as the only Republican Congress representative in Orange County.
Gearing up for a fierce showdown, the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee has officially labeled the 40th District as a “district in play” for the upcoming elections. To make things even more interesting, the Cook Political Report has downgraded the district’s status from “likely Republican” to “lean Republican.” And political watchers are paying close attention to these changes!
As of February 10, registered Republicans made up 38.48% of voters in the 40th District, while Democrats accounted for 33.09%, and independent voters held 22.14%. Given that Young Kim secured 55.3% of the vote in her last contest against Joe Kerr, things are shaping up for a competitive arena!
But it’s not just the 40th District that’s heating things up. Democratic incumbents Dave Min from CA-47 and Derek Tran from CA-45 brought in $753,000 and nearly $460,000 respectively, proving they’re also serious contenders. On the Republican side, Michelle Steel has maintained her campaign committee with $74,000 raised this quarter, and three Republicans are lining up to compete in the 45th District, although not all have made an impressive showing so far.
As for California’s 49th District, incumbent Mike Levin pulled in over $677,000, and challenger Jim Desmond gathered roughly $424,000. It seems like the mantra “the bigger the fight, the bigger the funds” rings true across the board! Generally, first-time candidates and those in tight races tend to outperform non-challenged incumbents in the fundraising realm.
As we approach the filing deadline for these House seats by March 6, 2026, one thing is crystal clear: the competition is heating up, and candidates are ready to pull all the stops to get ahead. With early fundraising successes indicating a slew of competitive races in Orange County, it looks like voters are in for an exciting electoral season!
